Canadiens looking for same consistent effort at home - Examiner Posted: 24 Apr 2010 04:51 PM PDT The Verizon Center in Washington, DC has been a home away from home for the Montreal Canadiens. Perhaps it's that the arena bears the same nickname as their own rink, occasionally referred to as "the Phone Booth." Or maybe it's the familiarity of the raucous crowd. Whatever it is, it's led the Habs to a pair of wins in three attempts this season, and three of five in the 2009-10 campaign overall. Yet while they've been successful in the other barn, home hasn't been so sweet; not just this year, but dating back to the 2008 postseason. Canadiens fans haven't seen their team win at the Bell Centre since Game 1 of their second round series against the Flyers two seasons ago. "It's tough when things don't go right (at home). We had one of our best periods of the season in the first period of our first game here and it didn't work out. We just couldn't find a goal," offered Hal Gill following a team meeting and off-ice workout Saturday at the Bell Sports Complex. "You want to produce for your home crowd and that can be a pressure thing sometimes, where you try and do too much," he continued. "We have to stick to our game plan. We know we can be successful if we ... play a simple game. "We did that last night and it paid off." They – and the fans – would certainly love a repeat on Monday. But after regaining some momentum and keeping their season alive, and with the series now shifting back to the Bell Centre, is the pressure on the Canadiens? While he believes it's on both teams– his side looking to stave off elimination and the Capitals wanting to close the door on this series – Gill noted it depends on how you approach the situation. "Pressure is what you make of it," explained the veteran rearguard. "If you put yourself under pressure and crack under pressure, then it's no good. But if you take that pressure and use it as a challenge, and embrace that challenge, then it's fun and you can use it the right way." On Friday, they opted for the latter. And their coach was happy with what he saw. "What pleased me most was our determination and the leadership of some of our players," said Jacques Martin. "Our key guys really stepped up their game last night. I also liked our execution." Execution has been an issue for the team throughout the series thus far, with the Canadiens playing well until a 10-minute stretch or so sees their game get away from them. Martin said they looked at different aspects of their game and certain elements that need improvement, including holding their concentration for 60 minutes or more. "Obviously we have to play better at home. I think we played a lot better in Washington," said Travis Moen, author of Friday's game-winning goal. "I think we owe it to the fans to come out and have a strong performance."
