A healthy discussion about dating Posted: 30 Mar 2010 09:12 PM PDT On Thursday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m., the Arlington Human Rights Commission will present a community dialogue entitled Safe Dating. There will be two dialogues that night, both addressing healthy dating. One will be led by Duane de Four and is for high school aged youth to learn about making healthy decisions in dating relationships and what to do if you or a friend finds themselves in an unhealthy relationship. It will be held in the Community Room of the Robbins Library. The other dialogue will be led by Julie Kahn-Schaye and is for adults wanting to learn about teen dating and how to open conversations with children about healthy dating. It will meet at the Whittemore Robbins House. de Four, M.A. is a freelance educator, writer and anti-sexist male activist specializing in gender violence prevention, diversity, and sexual health education. For almost ten years, de Four has worked with the groundbreaking Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) National Program as a national training consultant. Currently, Duane serves as an adjunct professor at the Northeastern University College of Professional Studies where he teaches Diversity and "Career and Life Planning" courses for the Foundation Year program. In his fourteen-plus years as an educator, de Four has facilitated hundreds of trainings, reaching thousands of students at every academic level, as well as coaches, staff, professional athletes and coaches in the NFL and NBA (including the Patriots and the Magic), and members of the military. Kahn-Schaye, LICSW is the director of the Dating Violence Intervention Program (DVIP) at Transition House in Cambridge. For 24 years, DVIP's mission has been to curb the disturbing prevalence of teen dating abuse by educating and training youth, parents and youth-serving professionals. Kahn-Schaye educates area youth to recognize the warning signs of dating abuse, and trains them to become leaders in educating their peers and changing social norms that promote violence. She educates parents and youth serving professionals to better understand the causes and dynamics of abusive relationships and to develop successful strategies to prevent, intervene and support young people involved with abuse. All members of the public are welcome to this free event. Refreshments will be served at 7 p.m. and the dialogue will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. The Community Room is located in the basement of the Robbins Library, 700 Massachusetts Avenue. The Whittemore Robbins House is located behind the library, 670R Mass. Ave. Questions about the event may be directed to the Human Rights Commission at 781-316-3250.

Posted: 31 Mar 2010 09:09 AM PDT Posted on: Wednesday, 31 March 2010, 07:15 CDT CHICAGO, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Singles who work day jobs know that it is difficult enough to meet that special someone. For those who work the second or third shift, however, meeting potential mates poses a real logistical challenge. That is exactly why Pierre D. Hall launched Offpeek.net (http://www.offpeek.net/). The name is a play on words, evolving from the "off shift," or off-peak hours. Hall said he changed "peak" to "peek" to encourage singles to take a peek at the site "and see what they've been missing." Visitors to the site can do just that - search or browse with no obligation whatsoever. Paid members, or subscribers, are able to send and receive emails, chat with other members online and use the private photo gallery. Hall says he learned about the need for such a service from experience. "I've been working night shifts since 1993," he said, "and I find it difficult to keep a good relationship with people who don't work the same shifts." Over the years, Hall has worked many shift configurations, including swing shifts/rotating shifts, 12-hour shifts lasting from 6 pm to 6 am, weekend nights and overnight truck-driver's stints lasting 14-16 hours. "Those who have not worked these non-traditional shifts before don't understand the habits or attitudes of people who do," he said. "Some of us like the night shift, but if you meet someone you like who works a different shift, as in a 9-to-5 job, it's difficult to see each other daily." So Hall designed Offpeek.net to cater more to the workers who "keep things rolling at night when most are asleep," such as police officers, firefighters, hospital staff, guards and others who work non-traditional shifts. Member profiles feature information basic to most dating sites, including age, gender and geographic location. Optional information is encouraged to help find that perfect match, including ethnicity, religion, children and habits. Hall said most off-peak workers are looking for a companion or love, just as 9-to-5'ers are. "Let's face it," he said, "if you find someone and click, it makes anyone's hard day - or night - at work better." Currently, membership is free for women and $1 a month for men. Registration can be completed in just three steps, and the site accepts PayPal for payment. Male subscribers can earn free time on the site by referring friends. For every different friend who signs up and pays, the referring subscriber will receive half the time the new member paid for, limited to the initial payment.
